Uiro
A traditional confectionary and Nagoya souvenir enjoyed since the Muromachi Period.
Uirou
Uiro is a local cake-like confectionary made from steamed rice flour and sugar. Available nationwide, 90% of the sweet is produced in the Tokai area, making it a true Nagoya and Aichi specialty. Variations include brown sugar, green tea, red bean and yuzu citrus amongst others. Small bite sized serves have recently become very popular.

Origin
Created in the Muromachi period (1336-1573) by China’s Chin Uiro as a way to dispense the aftertaste of Chinese herbal medicines, the sweet arrived via Fukuoka in Kyushu, and spread to Kyoto, Nagoya and even Odawara. A Nagoya specialty since the Edo period (1603-1868).
Availability
One of the most popular Nagoya souvenirs, Uiro is available at station souvenir stands and department stores, as well as the many specialty sweet shops in Nagoya and Aichi.
